Yated Ne’eman’s Latest Against Chovevei

PDF/Word.
It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect.
In the blogs:
Bronstein’s got a letter to the editor, and a comparison of “two institutions I would [not] normally associate.”
Harry Maryles’s “Time to Take a Stand” approach is much-discussed…including by DovBear, who through word-substitution mocks Maryles’s take.
Yeshiva World News’ comments are enlightening.
Jonathan Baker critiques the critique, “because many of its points are either distortions or fabrications.”
existential angst expresses it.
Krum takes on citations of R’ Joseph B. Soloveitchik.
Honestly Frum writes about the fact that the discussion “has degenerated into some sort of YU Avi Weiss bashing Lashon Hara fest.”
Hirhurim declares he’s “Not Taking a Stand.”

    From UOJ:

“Israel Singer was HONORED by the Agudath Israel dinner last year. Forced to pay back money he took under “questionable” circumstances from the WJC, he is not permitted to involve himself in any financial affairs of the WJC. Agudah saw fit to honor this thief, and facilitator of everything the Moetzes prohibited regarding interfaith dialogue.

Rot in hell, Shafran, Zweibel, Perlow & co.”

    From the Yated….
“Here is a report written by a YCT student on March 27, 2006 about an event that took place at YCT’s campus in Manhattan.

Today, as part of a World Jewish Congress led-delegation, around 30 bishops and two cardinals came to our school.

The events began with an opening speech by Israel Singer,

followed by a speech by Rabbi Avi Weiss, then one by our rosh hayeshiva, Rabbi Dov Linzer, after which, we broke up into small groups and did some text studying of Berakhos 26b, where there is a discussion of the establishing of prayer. After about 45 minutes of that, there were, again, a couple of little speeches, then Cardinal Lustiger spoke for a little bit, followed by a question and answer sequence, which was ended by lunch. Lunch, however, rather than ending the event, allowed for mingling among the students and bishops to talk. One point that was emphasized was that, although Vatican II has been around for forty years, it has only been in the last twenty that Catholic-Jewish relations have really been progressing.”

  2. Rabbi Shael Siegel Says:

It’s really amazing how the so-called orthodox community is so unhappy with itself. Every Tom, Dick and Harry has to weigh in regarding the legitimacy of YCT. Its probably the only institution with the integrity and vision to take on isssues facing quality Jewish survival in the deades ahead. YU was once there, but I believe has dropped the ball. There isn’t another serious institutuion on the block other than YCT.

What’s with the race to judgement on issues of Kefira. How does anyone in the blagosphere have the temerity to sit in judgement over others especially when dealing in such weighty issues. One would think that these luminaries in the blagosphere were actually scholars, but for the fact that they spend most of their time as batlanim reading blogs and apparently not much else.

  3. thanbo Says:

R’ Siegel: I thought the CJF is YU’s response to YCT. Along with giving Rabbi Brander a job in NY, now that his kids are going to YU. So it’s not “the only institution with the integrity and vision to take on isssues facing quality Jewish survival in the deades ahead.”

  4. Baruch Horowitz Says:

I discuss in the Mishmar link below, the fine balance that one needs when critiquing another’s viewpoints, whether Open Orthodoxy, or when engaging in other critiques, for that matter.

    Good post.

The question here is: Is the enemy of my enemy my friend?
Or maybe: Is the enemy of someone I hardly care about but who is the enemy of my friend my friend or my enemy?
Or better yet: If my enemy sides with my friend against someone I hardly care about then maybe my friend is in fact my enemy but it doesn’t bother me since I hardly care about the (institution) that my friend is an enemy of… or something…

The answer does not seem very difficult to discern from YCT’s own published statements, along with statements made by its founder and Dean, Rabbi Avi Weiss and its Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Dov Linzer.

Where are Yated’s editors? It should be “and “Dean”, “Rabbi” Avi Weiss and its “Rosh” “yeshiva”, “Rabbi” Dov Linzer.”

Good link. If you simply read the comments below the article you should understand why YCT should be supported.

There are too many messianic, magical, red string wearing, bubameitza believing, literalist morans in Judaism. There needs to be a counterweight.

    >Mordechai Plaut is an evil rashah for publishing this stuff.

For the record: (not that anyone really cares.)

You got the wrong Yated. Mordechai Plaut has nothing to do with the American Yated IFAIK. The Israeli version split with the American one years ago. (Part of the deal was that they (U.S.) could keep the name but they had to change the logo.)

Pinny Lifshutz is the man behind the U.S. version.

So, an institution founded and headed by a leading pro-Israel activist, Rabbi Avi Weiss, is now charged with being fashionably ant-Israel? Get real!

The first thing I noticed about the article was how stunningly deferential it was about YU and RYBS, most surprising.

Just a thought, but maybe YU benefits from having YCT around: because there’s a yeshiva to YU’s left, which YU types can join with the Haredim in bashing, it makes YU more kosher in Haredi eyes…

It’s time to think for yourself and not rely on what some obviously prejudiced source charges. The only truth in that long editorial about YCT was in some bare facts, not in any of their assessments. The bare fact is that a number of YCT students joined with students from other denominations in criticizing some of Israel’s actions towards the Palestinian arabs. This was at a time when the yeshiva (YCT) joined with other yeshivot (chareidi institutions were absent) and other Jewish organizations in the march on Washington. Let me assure you that many more YCT students marched in support of Israel than who joined those who were critical. Besides, those student embarrassed their founder by their action and were rebuked.

Rather than focusing on YCT, the Yated should focus on one of their own — specifically the reprehensuble views that were publicly made by Rav Dovid Cohen in Bergenfield last Sahbbos and that were repeated in private converstaion with others. His disgraceful words created a massive chillul hasem and are a much greater threat to authentic yiddishkeit than anything that is attributed to YCT. When the Moetzes or the Yated comes out with statement against Rav Dovid Cohen, then I can begin to listen to their crtique of YCT. Util that time, they have no credibillity.
