Converts’ Chance To Bore Everyone Else With Agonizing Text

Do you want to read a bunch of 4,000-word personal narratives about converting to Judaism? Neither do I, and I don’t even need the “about converting to Judaism” part to turn it down.
Well, we might not want to read it, but someone wants to compile it:

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
WHAT RUTH POSSESSED: JEWS BY CHOICE TELL THEIR STORIES
DEADLINE: November 30, 2006
Editors Anne Borden and Angela Brown seek first-person stories written by Jews by choice for an upcoming anthology.
WHAT RUTH POSSESSED will feature the personal essays of Jews by choice from around the world, while reflecting a broad spectrum of ages, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. Men and women, single, engaged, and married Jews by choice are all encouraged to share their stories.
* Maximum word count: 4,000
* All stories must be true and written in first person.
* Stories should contain strong characterization, dialogue, and plot. The best nonfiction personal essays read like fiction.
* In your story, please try to answer some of these questions:
–Why did you choose to become Jewish?
–How long did the process take?
–How did your family and friends (and/or your partner’s family and friends) react to your decision?
–What process did you go through to become Jewish?
–What stumbling blocks did you encounter?
–Did you have a mentor to help you along the way? If so, how did this help?
–What was your beit din and/or mikveh like?
–Are there any obstacles you face now that you are Jewish?
–What advice would you give someone who is considering becoming Jewish?
* Previously published material will be considered, but please make sure that you own the reprint rights. If your piece has appeared in another publication, include this information (where it was published and when) with your submission.
Please e-mail submissions as a Word or RTF attachment or in the body of an e-mail to whatruthpossessed@gmail.com. Include your name, mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address, as well as a 100-word-or-less bio. Contributors will receive two copies of the anthology and payment upon publication.

I’d like to read it, but I’m a convert. Sorry we bore you so much.

  2. Bill Cork Says:

I’ve got a shelf of convert books–Christians to Islam, Muslims to Christianity, Jews for Jesus, Protestants who became Catholic, Catholics who became Protestant, evangelicals who became Episcopalian, Christians who became Christian Scientist or Mormon. Frankly (and I speak as someone who has contributed to a couple such volumes of the Protestant to Catholic variety), they all start to sound the same after a while.

  3. Yossi "Joe" Izrael Says:

It’s good business to the Avi Wei$$ Leib Trpper giyur mafia - they get between $10000 and $25000 per head that they bring under the Schinah’s wings. Many girim are willing to pay a hefty sum to get into bed with a jewish girl, and many people in the former Soviet block are willing to emigrate to the land of milk and honey where Alia can mean quite a nice buck with some benefit packages. Yep, many unhappy and unwanted people, including organizations looking after them, will pay a nice price for a russian dollie.
